Fluorescent black lights are typically made in the same fashion as normal fluorescent lights except that only one phosphor is used and the normally clear glass envelope of the bulb may be replaced by a deep-bluish-purple glass called Wood's glass, a nickel-oxide-doped glass, which blocks almost all visible light above 400 nanometers. The color of such lamps is often referred to in the trade as "black light blue" or "BLB." This blue or violet color is created by blocking light wave lengths allowing only UV-A ultraviolet to be visible.
 
The applications of this type of varies from use in a theater for visual effects to counterfeit detection. The next you are going through airport security you will notice that the officer uses a black light blue light bulb to check your drivers license because there are elements on your drivers license that can only be seen under a black light blue or UV-A light. There are also applications where hobbyist use hand held black light blue flashlights to search for rock and various insects. Black light blue bulbs have many uses in the medical field for therapeutic applications.
